The use of props can greatly enhance your photos. The props you choose can help convey a variety of moods: from serene to dynamic. They can also transport you to a specific place or setting: a casual outdoor picnic or a luxurious formal sit down dinner.
When you are involved in food styling and photography, your prop collection can grow rapidly. This is why we are hosting a prop swap! If you have grown tired of using any props or want to get rid of spares, bring them to EWR. They could be someone else’s treasure.
What to bring? Small dishes, cutlery, paper or cloth napkins, fabric, placemats, linens, decorative paper for backgrounds, ramekins… the sky is the limit.
Read more about how props can be used to enhance your photographs from Renee Comet of Comet Photo, one of our Eat Write Retreat speakers, in her blog post: The Supporting Cast: Proper Pros

Eat Write Retreat is more than simply a food blogging conference. We offer a weekend of culinary exploration and education that makes this conference a true learning vacation.
To keep our attendees on the cutting edge of culinary trends, we have organized a one-of-a-kind luncheon at
Elizabeth’s Gone Raw, DC’s premiere raw-vegan restaurant. Owner Elizabeth Petty will take us on a deliciously exquisite journey through the textures, flavors and unique preparations of raw cuisine. In the process she will discuss why she believes all of us are destined to include more raw foods in our diets.
“Anyone interested in food and food issues–especially a food blogger–stands to benefit immensely from a better understanding of raw food, its nutritional benefits and the positive impact eating raw has on the planet,” says Elizabeth.
Our exploration at Elizabeth’s Gone Raw will feature an all raw-vegan tasting menu designed exclusively for Eat Write Retreat. This spectacular dining event will have our attendees talking and thinking about raw food for a long time to come. You won’t want to miss it!
About Elizabeth’s Gone Raw
Elizabeth’s Gone Raw is Washington DC’s premiere raw-vegan restaurant. Our raw tasting menu has been created to evoke the essence of living foods, prepared with imagination and thoughtfulness. Each dish boasts a variety of flavors, colors and textures combining raw ingredients in ways that are both healthy and innovative. Everything we serve is free of dairy, gluten and meats.

- Our Culinary Workshops are truly “hands-on!”
(photo courtesy Olga Berman, Mango & Tomato)
One of the features that sets Eat Write Retreat apart from all other food blogging conferences and events is the hands-on sessions. This year, we are thrilled to announce our continued partnership with OXO, the leader in innovative kitchen tools and accessories. To make sure our attendees get the most out of this engaging session, this year’s OXO Kitchen Challenge will feature an Iron Chef-style team challenge!

That’s right, not only will you be honing your cooking and recipe development skills, this time you’ll be competing in teams to create the best dish! Here’s how this workshop is shaping up.
Before the conference starts:
- “secret” sponsor ingredients will be revealed!
- teams will be assigned!
- strategizing begins between teams and Chef Susan Holt of CulinAerie!
- OXO will assemble customized sets of kitchen tools for each team, based on their recipes and equipment needs (to be used during the challenge)
During the Culinary Workshops:
- introduction to sponsors and ingredients!
- one or more curve balls thrown into the mix!
- brilliant cooking skills displayed by all!
- Bonnie Benwick from the Washington Post on hand to judge the final dish!
That’s right…just when you’ve perfected your recipe and honed your process, we’re going to take this class to another level by introducing a twist. Maybe two!
More than anything, you are going to have a blast, getting to know your fellow attendees in a whole new way, while cooking up a storm.
Want to get in on the fun ahead of time? Leave a comment with your suggestion for a curve ball we can use during this year’s Culinary Workshops. If we use your idea, you’ll be entered to win a swag bag. (And we are known for our swag bag!)
