Join us for an intensive media training session that will sharpen your on-screen skills.

On-camera work can be a wonderful addition to your portfolio as a food blogger. From Satellite Media Tours (SMTs) for national clients, to cooking demos on your local news affiliate, polishing your work on the small screen can open big doors. Discover the tricks of the video trade while we slice, dice and dish about watermelonduring this hands-on media training workshop.

During our workshop, we’ll invite interested attendees to participate in on-air interviews focused on nutritious and delicious watermelon. Our expert, Karen Kapnick of Kreative Konnection (and veteran media consultant for global clients) will touch on all the essential ingredients that create a polished on-air presence:

• interview process from the anchor’s point of view
• how to talk in “sound bites”
• weaving brand messaging with “news you can use”
• secrets to successful cooking demos

The National Watermelon Promotion Board has created a special offer for all Eat Write Retreat attendees who register by April 30, 2014. Develop a watermelon recipe that can be re-created on camera during our media training session, and you could win a prize pack from Calphalon (valued at over $500)! What’s more, if you’ve got the right stuff, you could be selected to star in our media training workshop. Name That Signature Cocktail and Win!

Safest Choice Eggs helped kick of this year’s Eat Write Retreat conference in high style by sponsoring our Signature Cocktails event. Not only are these unique shell-pasteurized eggs perfect in cookie dough, mousses and homemade mayonnaise, but they make delicious drinks, too! Plus, they are free from the risk of salmonella, unlike non-pasteurized eggs. Which makes using them in cocktails all the more appealing.

We just had to try our hand at “silver, gold and royal” cocktails as part of the Signature Cocktails with Safest Choice Eggs event. Paired with retro spirits Sage and Root, from local artisan distiller Art in the Age and fresh fruit juice, these drinks are tasty, balanced and fun! In fact, the only thing they are missing is a name!

Cocktail A Sage Cocktail
1 1/2 oz Sage
3/4 oz Sugar In The Raw syrup
3/4 oz cucumber water
1/2 oz grapefruit juice
1/2 oz lemon juice
1/2 of 1 Safest Choice egg white
Small pinch sea salt

Add all to tin, dry shake without ice to emulsify. Add ice and shake vigorously, strain into coupe and garnish with grapefruit twist.

Cocktail B Root Cocktail
1 1/2 oz Root
1/2 oz Sugar In The Raw syrup
1/2 oz lemon juice
1/2 oz orange juice
1/2 oz half & half
1 whole Safest Choice egg
5 drops orange blossom water

Dry shake all ingredients in a tin to emulsify, then add ice and shake vigorously. Strain over new ice into collins glass.

Amazing Apps Culinary Challenge Recipe Link

Eat Write Retreat Culinary Challenge Guidelines:

Four delicious and versatile ingredients will be highlighted in the Amazing Apps Culinary Challenge: California Figs, California Ripe Olives, US Potatoes and California Raisins.

Each participating blogger has been randomly assigned one of these ingredients to feature in an  Amazing Appetizer recipe blog post.

Here are the Culinary Challenge guidelines:

  • To participate, create and post an original appetizer recipe featuring your designated ingredient
  • In your blog post, include at least one piece of new information that you learned about your ingredient from materials included in the box
  • All blog posts must be published by May 15, 2013 to be eligible
